To determine if you have prediabetes, type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes, you must get your blood sugar checked. Testing is straightforward, and results are often available shortly. This device checks your blood sugar levels before and after you consume a glucose-containing beverage. Before the test, you will fast (not eat) overnight and have your blood collected to assess your fasting blood sugar level. After that, you'll drink the beverage and have your blood sugar levels tested one hour, two hours, and perhaps three hours later. A blood sugar level of 140 mg/dL or below at 2 hours is considered normal, 140 to 199 mg/dL suggests prediabetes, and 200 mg/dL or more implies diabetes. The A1C test determines your average blood sugar level over the previous two or three months. An A1C of less than 5.7% is considered normal, between 5.7 and 6.4% suggests prediabetes, and 6.5% or more implies diabetes. This test analyzes your blood sugar levels following a fast (no eating) overnight. A fasting blood sugar level of 99 mg/dL or less is considered normal, 100 to 125 mg/dL suggests prediabetes, and 126 mg/dL or more implies diabetes.
