An erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a blood test that can detect inflammation in the body. Inflammation is the immune system's reaction to damage, infection, and a variety of illnesses such as immune system disorders, certain malignancies, and blood problems. Red blood cells are known as erythrocytes. A sample of your blood is sent to a facility for an ESR test. A medical practitioner places the sample in a tall, thin test tube and time how quickly the red blood cells settle or sink to the bottom. Red blood cells normally sink slowly. However, inflammation causes red blood cells to clump together. Because these cell aggregates are heavier than single cells, they sink faster. If an ESR test reveals that your red blood cells sink faster than usual, you may have a medical condition that is producing inflammation. The speed with which your test results indicate how much inflammation you have. Higher levels of inflammation are associated with faster ESR rates. However, an ESR test alone cannot determine what is causing the inflammation.
